girls.\nWomen around the world spend 200 million hours a day drawing water and have to walk long distances to do so.\nA well in the immediate vicinity therefore means more time for the mothers to look after the family and grow food, as well as enough time for the girls to attend school. The borehole is then lined and secured.<\/p>\n<p>In rare cases, deeper drilling is necessary. However, this requires the installation of a solar pump, as the conventional hand pump is not designed for such depths.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-9023\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-9023\" class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Well renovations:<\/strong> Sometimes older wells suffer a burst pipe or other major defects. Such major defects often cannot be repaired by the local well committee. This is why we renovate such wells, for example by removing the pipe from the ground and replacing it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sanitary facilities:<\/strong> Hygiene is important to prevent diseases. In sub-Saharan Africa, <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/sanitation#access-to-safe-sanitation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">18%<\/a> of the population defecate in the open air. A lack of sanitary facilities often leads to illness. As a result, <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/sanitation#the-global-distribution-of-deaths-from-sanitation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5%<\/a> of deaths in low-income countries are attributable to this problem. This is why we are building latrines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hygiene:<\/strong> To ensure hygiene, people not only need latrines, but also the opportunity to wash their hands with soap and water. <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/hygiene#access-to-handwashing-facilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">74%<\/a> of sub-Saharan countries lack this access.
