School meals open doors
While most children are still asleep, the day has already begun for 15-year-old Josefa from Kalulu, Angola.
At six o’clock in the morning, she helps her parents in the fields. Afterwards, she sets off for school, walking 11 kilometres to get there. For Josefa, no journey to school is too far.
But her long journey is worth it.
At school, she receives a nutritious school meal from ForAfrika, giving her the energy she needs to concentrate and learn. Often, it is the most important meal of her day – especially when weather conditions mean that harvests at home are poor or fail altogether.
Back at home, she helps in the fields, fetches water, does household chores and completes her homework.
Josefa is especially excited about the new school year. Unlike her siblings, she won’t have to drop out of school because of the long distance.
Thanks to the new classrooms in nearby Canjola, she can now attend Grade 7. “Now I can dream differently and continue my education,” she says with determination.
A red bowl changes everything.
School meals open doors – to education, better learning and a future full of possibilities.
This Christmas, give children like Josefa the chance to continue their education and make their dreams come true.
“My grandson will soon be learning in a proper classroom, and the tree trunk he used to sit on will be nothing but a memory.”
After taking a gardening course at the school herself, she shares with gratitude:
Maria from Angola is a member of a parents’ committee. The construction of the new school brings hope to her, her grandson and the entire village.
Change the future with us today!
Our education programme takes a holistic approach that goes far beyond providing school meals.
- School meals encourage regular school attendance.
- It raises awareness of health and hygiene.
- It supports children’s development by giving them opportunities to learn, play and build friendships.
- It increases school enrolment and graduation rates.
- It improves girls’ lives through education, equal opportunities and menstrual health awareness.
- It encourages open dialogue within the village community.
- It improves the living conditions of children, their families and entire communities.
- It provides security, stability and hope for the future.
Many children learn in difficult conditions at school, for example outdoors or in makeshift huts.
In extreme heat or heavy rain, learning becomes a challenge. Often, there is no sheltered place where children can concentrate on their lessons.
By building new classrooms, we create safe spaces for learning.
