Maria is deputy chair of the parents’ committee in Lusite, Angola. She has been involved with the village primary school for many years, and improving education for the children is particularly close to her heart. In this article, she talks about the progress made in recent years and the future she sees in it.

“For many years, we parents looked for ways to build classrooms so that our children would no longer have to sit under trees or elsewhere. Now those efforts are coming to an end.”

Maria takes on responsibility

Since 2019, Maria has been vice-chair of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in Lusite. She also supports the school as a volunteer cook. Providing school meals is the key measure for changing the education situation in the long term.

Maria’s own children are now grown up. Today she lives with her nine-year-old grandson, who is in his third year of primary school. She is particularly moved by the prospect that he will soon be able to learn in far better conditions.

High-quality learning spaces: a real milestone for the village community

For many years, parents in Lusite looked for ways to create additional classrooms. Some children had to learn under trees or in simple makeshift shelters. The construction of the new school in Lusite is changing this fundamentally. According to Maria, parents will no longer have to build small mud huts with grass roofs to protect pupils from the sun and the weather.

“With the new school, all that is a thing of the past. My grandson will soon be learning in a proper classroom, and the tree trunk he used to sit on will be nothing but a memory,” she says proudly.

For the whole village community, the new classrooms are a huge step forward.

Educational opportunities for generations

Through her long-standing commitment, Maria is helping children in her community gain better opportunities for education and development. The progress in Lusite shows how investing in educational infrastructure can bring about lasting change. When schools have safe classrooms, children, families and entire communities all benefit.

Maria sees ForAfrika’s support as an important contribution to this positive development, and she hopes that future generations will also benefit from the progress that has been made.

“ForAfrika has done so much for us. We are grateful – and we will remember it for many generations to come.”
